Short trousers
Back in the 50's, it was your age which defined what trousers you wore. Until you went to secondary school (in fact, in some, until after the end of your first year there), you wore short trousers - did not matter if you had cold knees, long trousers were reserved for bigger boys.

Yes, I remember wearing short trousers in primary school in the 60s. It was common wear for boys back then. Hard to believe it's over 50 years ago now!
