Getting out of bed in the 50s

Winter - out of bed, feet on cold lino floor, ice on the inside of windows; no central heating, no radiators, boiler to heat water had to be lit (coke brought in from outside); sometimes hot water came from a back boiler at the back of the open fire; if more heat wanted, fire had to be laid (tightly rolled newspaper, small wood kindling, selected small lumps of coal) and lit and then made to draw by the unbelievably dangerous holding of a broadsheet of newspaper held over the fireplace opening to create a draught to get the fire going; paper often caught fire and was swiftly added to the grate. Then walk or cycle to school - no lifts!
