The importance of news in the 50s

The second world war ended in 1945 so it is not surprising that, during the forties, fifties and into the sixties, listening to the news on the radio was seen as being important. It was something that fathers, mainly (who had probably been in the war), viewed as almost sacrosanct - talking during the news could lead to punishment for a child.
