Who's calling on the 'phone?

A lot of the people alive today will not remember a time when one could not tell who was calling when the 'phone rang. In the 50s and the 60s - and indeed into the 70s - there was no way of telling. During the 80s I think it was possible but not widespread. Used to be quite exciting wondering who was calling!
