I recall ‘Old Spice’ and some fairly scented air stuff like
Brylcream (a little dab will do you) but, generally speaking, males in the 50s did
not use scents. When you look at the vast array of male scented products available
on any supermarket shelf and sniff the air where a passing young male has walked,
you realise what a change there has been since the 50s. If a male had smelt as
strongly as many now do, other people would have raised their eyebrows and said
to each other “he’s not like us you know” (which is how people would refer to
the un-discussable issue of homosexuality). As for males using face creams or moisteners –
no way in the 50s and I doubt in the 60s either. You have to take your hat off to the cosmetics
industry marketing people for creating a need that does not exist.
Those of us who remember how things were 50 years or more ago should take the time to make their memories available to younger people. A world without the internet, without on screen games and where direct face to face conversation substituted for texts, emails and so called social media - was it better? Was it worse? Whichever, it was certainly different. PLEASE do add comments - thank you. Search this blog using the search box at the bottom or choose a topic from the labels on the right.
