I do not remember there being many power plug sockets in
most rooms – in fact, I think one single one was the norm. The three pin plug was
bigger than now, had round pins and the cable colours were black, red and green
– no explanation needed for which was what, it is obvious! There were no
integral fuses in the plugs and if a fuse went, one had to go to the fuse board
and pull out what one hoped was the appropriate fuse carrier; the fuse was a
piece of wire which one had to stretch across a ceramic back plate; all houses
had cards of fuse wire which came, I think, in 5, 10 and 15. Modern consumer units make it virtually (or maybe actually?) impossible for one to get a shock - that was not the case in the 40s, 50s or 60s when most of us learnt how painful it could be to treat electricity with less than respect. Insulating tape was fabric based and was black.
Those of us who remember how things were 50 years or more ago should take the time to make their memories available to younger people. A world without the internet, without on screen games and where direct face to face conversation substituted for texts, emails and so called social media - was it better? Was it worse? Whichever, it was certainly different. PLEASE do add comments - thank you. Search this blog using the search box at the bottom or choose a topic from the labels on the right.
