Electric plugs, sockets and fuses

I do not remember there being many power plug sockets in most rooms – in fact, I think one single one was the norm. The three pin plug was bigger than now, had round pins and the cable colours were black, red and green – no explanation needed for which was what, it is obvious! There were no integral fuses in the plugs and if a fuse went, one had to go to the fuse board and pull out what one hoped was the appropriate fuse carrier; the fuse was a piece of wire which one had to stretch across a ceramic back plate; all houses had cards of fuse wire which came, I think, in 5, 10 and 15. Modern consumer units make it virtually (or maybe actually?) impossible for one to get a shock - that was not the case in the 40s, 50s or 60s when most of us learnt how painful it could be to treat electricity with less than respect. Insulating tape was fabric based and was black.
