I’m sure that policemen used to be taller in the 50s and 60s
and that most of them we around 6’ (that’s 6 feet, which is about 183
centimetres). I also think that policewomen (and, remember, in the 50s and 60s,
we did not talk about police constables, it was a policeman (PC) or a
policewoman (WPC)) were not expected to do the same things as policemen and –
please tell me if you know – were not paid as much as the policemen. Of course,
as they did not have mobile phones or radios, they had to use the police boxes
(many of you will know them only as the Tardis in Doctor Who) which were blue
and placed in visible locations; the PC could, I think, make a call from the
outside by opening a key locked phone or enter the box through a door – no idea
what was inside. There was a light on the top of the box which very
occasionally flashed – but I do not know why.
Those of us who remember how things were 50 years or more ago should take the time to make their memories available to younger people. A world without the internet, without on screen games and where direct face to face conversation substituted for texts, emails and so called social media - was it better? Was it worse? Whichever, it was certainly different. PLEASE do add comments - thank you. Search this blog using the search box at the bottom or choose a topic from the labels on the right.
