In
the 50s and 60s many pubs in the London area which catered for locals had a
microphone on a stand and perhaps a small raised ‘stage’. This is, of course, in
the days before karaoke. Anyone who thought that they could sing was welcome to
have a go. Seemed to me that they almost invariably started their song with “wella
wella” followed by something like “that’ll be the day . . .”. Hence ‘wella
singers’. I think wella singers may well have been found in other parts of the
country but I only know of those in the London area. Wella singers were also very generous as they almost always started with "I'd like to give you a song . . ."
Those of us who remember how things were 50 years or more ago should take the time to make their memories available to younger people. A world without the internet, without on screen games and where direct face to face conversation substituted for texts, emails and so called social media - was it better? Was it worse? Whichever, it was certainly different. PLEASE do add comments - thank you. Search this blog using the search box at the bottom or choose a topic from the labels on the right.
