Brown bread

In the 50s, brown bread was something that, on the whole, was eaten by poor people; most of us had white sliced bread like Mothers Pride - I think that it was 'designed' to get the lowest rejection rather than the highest liking and the key thing was that it should remain 'fresh' for several days. I once had a two week summer holiday job at a Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) bakery - but less of that unless anyone asks!
