Inappropriate behaviour.

I have no idea whether there was more or less inappropriate behaviour in the 50s and 60s than there is now; however, I am pretty sure that our reaction back then to any such event was, rightly or wrongly, different – on the whole, we would shrug our shoulders and get on with life. I recall being a member of an organisation (carefully avoiding saying which one) when I was about 10 years old (during the 50s) and, as part of it, going to a weekend camp; the adult male in charge thought that it would be sexual fun for him to pull down my pyjamas and spank my backside; I did not share his enthusiasm for this and my punch to his nose drew blood; nothing more happened from either side. Towards the end of the 50s I spent a fortnight of my summer holiday working as a commis waiter in a well known hotel (golf course next to it, annual party conferences) and used to suffer whenever someone ordered a salad which had to be got from the cold kitchen run by a deranged Scotsman who thought it was fun to punch any temporary (and obviously younger) waiter who entered his domain. It hurt. I guess that, were I 40 years younger, I would be seeking compensation from each of those, but, back then, we just got on with things – oh, just remembered that there was also the danger in the main kitchen where the folk who washed up came from the local loony bin (the expression back then) and who would throw sharp kitchen knives at anyone who accidentally said anything to offend them. Fun.
