Contraception

Contraception in the 50s and early 60s before the introduction and wide availability of the oral contraceptive pill was mainly self restraint, no, wait until after marriage, completely non sensitive rubber condoms and rubber diaphragms (Dutch caps) which the female would use. Coitus interruptus was also used. The only methods which were 100% safe were “no” and rigorous self restraint. I believe that in the early days of the contraceptive pill, many doctors (rightly or wrongly) took it upon themselves to decide who should have the pill and refused girls who were not married. It was extremely unlikely that any attempt at sex would have been made until a couple had been ‘going out’ for some time.
