Boxing, the day after Christmas day is, I think, restricted to the British. In the
fifties and sixties, one could be sure to get a knock on the door from the
milkman, coal man, postman, window cleaner and dustman – they would give a cheery
greeting and wait expectantly until one gave them some money (usually in an
envelope) and this would be their ‘Christmas box’ – hence Boxing day. Is this custom still widespread? Don't know.
