Grey school shirts

Help me with this one please -  I remember, or I think I remember, that some of the grey school shirts that were worn in the 50s, had to be pulled on over the head as there was only a relatively short opening front - similar to a rugby shirt. Grey school shirts definitely existed and were worn in preference to white ones as they could be worn for several days without being so obviously dirty. So, am I right or am I wrong?
